Alabama Appears to Be Opening up to Medical Marijuana

Alabama hasn’t approved complete medical marijuana regulation yet, but the state is slowly opening up to the idea of medical marijuana. But it has passed laws allowing CBD oil to be used for some conditions as it does not produce a high. The passage of Leni’s Law has allowed some families a bit of relief – especially those with children diagnosed with autism.

Mark Coleman testified recently regarding the progress that his daughter has made from using CBD oil, according to AL.com. His daughter’s form of autism produces severe symptoms and bouts of self-harm such as slamming her head into things, biting anything within reach and pinching her arms. According to this family, Mary Ann’s has improved tenfold.

Mark Coleman said, “I ordered my shipment three days before Leni’s Law went into effect so it would be in the mailbox the day it started.”

In Alabama, parents and guardians of adolescent patients can obtain a prescription that allows them to possess CBD oil.

Coleman also said, “It used to be when Mary Ann had a meltdown at the house and had her self-injurious behaviors, the only thing I could do is move her to a safe place, which was the couch. And I would basically have to hold her arms down and keep her from slamming her head or biting herself. And that would last sometimes 30 or 45 minutes before she calmed down. I would leave that situation, I would be wringing wet with sweat and just exhausted mentally and physically. Mentally more than physically because it just tears you apart when you’re watching your child hurt herself.”

He concluded his comments by saying, “Since she started the cannabis oil, I haven’t had to go to the couch with her one time.”

The Coleman is just one of many families in Alabama that are benefitting from being able to treat their children’s autism and epilepsy with CBD oil. The stories of success are bountiful across the state. Many hope that expansions to Alabama’s medical marijuana law happen in the near future to provide an additional treatment option for adults and adolescents for varying medical conditions.
