Alabama Senator Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana

Canna

Senator Dick Brewbaker introduced Senate Bill 251 in an effort to decriminalize marijuana possession of less than an ounce. Penalties for possessing over an ounce, however, would increase.

Possessing an ounce or less of marijuana would be treated similarly to a traffic ticket with a proposed fine not exceeding $250, according to NORML. If this legislation passes, no criminal record or arrest would occur if the offense is only simple marijuana possession. The current punishment for marijuana possession is a $6,000 fine and up to one year in jail.

Possessing over one ounce would result in a felony charge.
